From Tronchetto port, the final point reachable by vehicles, we take a vaporetto to the historic island. In Venice, all the daily vehicles we are used to seeing, such as police cars, ambulances, garbage trucks, and municipal buses, are replaced by boats in this car-free city. As we walk from the waterfront toward St. Mark’s Square, you can see the Venetian prison and the Bridge of Sighs connecting the prison to the Doge’s Palace, San Giorgio Island directly opposite the bridge, the twin columns at the main facade of the Doge’s Palace, considered the city’s entrance gate, and the statues atop these columns, symbols of Venice. The square where St. Mark’s Basilica stands was described by Napoleon as “the most beautiful square in the world.” Although the basilica was completed in the 9th century, it took until the 17th century to reach its present form. The 4 bronze horses on its main facade were brought from Istanbul after the Second Crusade. During your free time, you may watch the statues atop the clock tower strike the bell every hour and climb the bell tower to enjoy a panoramic view of Venice.
