After our tour, we depart for Venice. Guests who wish may join the optional Trieste Tour to be held along the way. From the port of Tronchetto, the final point accessible by vehicles, we depart by vaporetto for the historic island. After an enjoyable Vaporetto journey, we get off the Vaporetto at a point near San Marco Square, the historic center of the city, and begin our tour among the canals. Here, all the vehicles we are accustomed to seeing in daily life, such as police cars, ambulances, garbage trucks and municipal buses, have been replaced by boats, as the area is free of motor vehicles. As we walk from the Slave Quay to San Marco Square, you can see the Venice prison and the “Ponte dei Sospiri” Bridge of Sighs connecting the prison to the Doge’s Palace, San Giorgio Island directly opposite the bridge, the twin columns in the square on the main façade of the Doge’s Palace, known as the gateway to the city, and the statues symbolizing Venice on these columns. The square where St. Mark’s Basilica is located was called “the most beautiful square in the world” by Napoleon. Although the construction of the cathedral was completed in the 9th century, it took until the 17th century to reach its present form. The four bronze horses you will see on its main façade were brought from Istanbul upon the return from the Second Crusade. During your free time, you can watch the statues at the top of the clock tower strike the bell every hour, and climb the bell tower to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of all of Venice.
